The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) today delivered its judgment in the case of Sargsyan v. Armenia, finding a violation of applicant Gohar Sargsyan’s right to freedom of assembly.
The case concerns the forcible dispersal by police of a peaceful protest held on February 11, 2015, by parents of soldiers who had died while serving in the Armenian armed forces. The protest took place in front of the Presidential Palace.
Police officers ordered the participants to leave the sidewalk in front of the Presidential Palace. When the parents refused to comply, the officers began pushing them. They grabbed Gohar Sargsyan by her arms and legs and dragged her to the opposite sidewalk. As a result of the police intervention, Sargsyan’s condition deteriorated and she fainted.
The ECHR found that the actions of the police constituted a violation of Gohar Sargsyan’s right to freedom of assembly.
The Court awarded the applicant €9,000 in compensation for non-pecuniary damage.
