On September 27 of 2017, “The Informed Citizens Union” NGO organized a public discussion on the topic “The benefits and shortcomings of the Armenia’s membership to EUU”, which was attended by the members of parliamentarian groups, experts in the field, as well as NGO and media representatives.
Mikayel Melkumyan from “Tsarukyan” alliance made a remark in regard to the draft project on the termination of Armenia’s membership to the Eurasian Economic Union, mentioning that there are risks in the question, which should be discussed before the beginning of the process. Gevorg Gorisyan from “Yelq” party detailed the damages caused to the economy of Armenia in the outcomes of EUU membership, highlighting that the structure impends not only the development of Armenia, but also questions the sovereignty of the state. Gagik Melikyan from the Republican Party opposed his colleague, mentioning that, taking into consideration all the obstacles, the Republic of Armenia while demonstrating a will to make a sovereign decision, chose the EEU Integration, which was the only correct path.
During his speech, Daniel Ioannisyan, the project coordinator of “Informed Citizens’ Union” pointed out the economic problems in case of continuation of EEU-Armenia partnership and raised the issue on the lack of conducting profound expertise research in this regard.
Gagik Makaryan, the Head of the Employees Union also touched upon the pros and cons of the EEU-Armenia partnership noting that the EEU family is of temporary nature for Armenia, but at the moment leaving its partnership is pointless. Ashot Tevikyan, member of the Eurasian expertise group was for the EEU-Armenia Integration in his turn.
