On 18 July 2022, during the visit to Baku, the\nEuropean Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and the President of\nAzerbaijan Ilham Aliyev signed a memorandum of understanding, which intends to\ndouble imports of Azeri gas through the Southern Gas Corridor to at least 20\nbillion cubic metres a year by 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thus, the European Union signed a gas deal\nwith Azerbaijan, a fully autocratic regime and an aggressor country, whose\nactions violated the international humanitarian law, and whose war crimes perpetrated\nin Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) only two years ago, continuous human rights\ncrimes, armenophobic racist policy and their consequences have not been\nproperly addressed, have not been censured and made accountable for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This gas deal signed with Ilham Aliyev continues\nthe vicious approach that a corrupt dictator and aggressor can still be a \u201cgood\npartner\u201d to an international body functioning on the values of democracy and\nhuman rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Whereas, this deal is essentially the\nreproduction of EU\u2019s policy of energy cooperation with Russia\u2019s\nanti-humanitarian and anti-civilizational regime that lasted for years on end\nand encouraged Putin\u2019s regime to continue its aggression and war crimes against\nUkraine. It is unbelievable and extremely concerning that it is not yet clear\nto the European Union that almost two decades of impunity and the\nreal-politic’s “feeding and nurturing” have got Putin’s regime to\nwhat it has become today. Ultimately, it turns out that the democratic Europe\nis ready to compromise its values for the sake of the economic prosperity of\nthis instant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is obvious that in the conditions of the\ncurrent energy crisis and the risk of world hunger, the European Union and the\nworld need to quickly solve the issue of energy and food deficit, However, \nboth the European Union and the world have enough resources to solve the\naforementioned issues with dignity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The fight that Ukraine is currently fighting by\nconfronting the aggression of Putin\u2019s regime, the biggest challenge to the\ninternational law and human civilization since the second world war, deserves\nmore principled, fair, long-term solutions, even if they are more expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Only with such an approach is it possible to\nconfront, prevent and put an end to dictatorial countries\u2019 illegal actions, and\ntheir practice of solving international issues through blackmail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The contract between the European Union and Ilham\nAliyev is not the message that the international community, countries and\nsocieties of the region should get during the period of the war unleashed by\nPutin\u2019s regime against Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rewarding one corrupt aggressor dictator to\npunish another one inevitably undermines international justice and encourages\nimpunity and the use of brute force as effective means of international practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Western democracies must and are able to find\nsuch solutions to the current challenges that do not subordinate human rights,\ndemocracy, justice and the international humanitarian law to economic, energy,\nand geopolitical expediency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
