Report on the Human Rights Situation in Armenia during 2017: U.S. State Department

The U.S. State Department touched upon the current most important problems of the human rights situation in the Republic of Armenia, such as the torture, bad and inhuman prison condition, arbitrary detainments and arrests, lack of judicial independence, inability to ensure the right to fair trail, intervention to the professional activities of the journalists, use of the state legal powers to punish the critics, physical intervention to the freedom to association by the law enforcement forces, restrictions to participate in political life, systematic corruption in Government etc.

A reference to the information note on “Human Rights and Justice Crisis in Armenia during the months of January-July of 2017” elaborated by the “Protection of Rights without Borders” NGO was made in the Report.

In the information note, the Organization made a reference to “Sasna Tsrer” armed group activities of 2017, trails against the participants of other related events, as well as to the violations of human rights and especially of the right to fair trail of the participants within the scope of Vahan Shirkhanyan case.

The information note also touched upon the issue of subjecting the advocates to personal inspection under Article 8 of the European Convention of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms from the perspective of fair trial.
