The visit of the US ambassador and EU responsible on political issues to the NGO Protection of rights without borders.
On August 5 2016 the US ambassador Richard Mills and the EU responsible on political issues Andrea Chalupova visited the NGO “Protection of rights without borders”.
During the meeting discussion the ambassador asked about the problems and obstacles for the protection of rights of participants in the peaceful marches started in 17 July 2016.
It should be reminded that peaceful marches started in support of “Sasna Tser” group during which a lot of citizens were subjected to violence and taken to police stations.
The NGO took the prote
ction of citizens who were injured because of illegal actions of police. The head of the organization Haykuhi Harutyunyan presented the information on the events happened from 17-29 July, as well as the obstacles and problems occurred during these days. The NGO representatives gave their opinion about the police illegal actions.
The Ambassador told the group that “the past two weeks in Armenia have highlighted the importance of organizations monitoring and working to protect human rights, organizations such as Protection of Rights Without Borders. Like PRWB, the U.S. Embassy is deeply troubled at the credible reports of excessive force by the police towards protestors and violence targeting working journalists during the Erebuni standoff. And the Embassy is concerned that widespread detentions of those exercising their right of peaceful assembly and free speech still continue, most recently last night when twenty-five demonstrators were detained by police at the end of a demonstration, for reasons that are unexplained. Security authorities and government should not use their responsibility to maintain public safety and order as an excuse for frightening Armenians from exercising their rights to participate in peaceful demonstrations.”
Andrea Chalupova also mentioned that she is concerned about the recent serious human rights violations in Armenia.
At the end of the meeting the meeting parties expressed their hope for the effective investigation of police illegal actions and the responsible ones will be punished for the gross human rights violations.
